What Bulbs Does a 5th Gen 4Runner Use?
The 5th-generation Toyota 4Runner covers a large range of model years, so it's important to identify the exact year and factory lighting configuration before purchasing replacement bulbs.
For the common factory-halogen headlight setup:
Low beam: H11
High beam: 9005/HB3
The high-beam circuit is also used for daytime-running-light operation on applicable vehicles, which is important when installing LED bulbs.

Can I Put LED Headlight Bulbs in My 4Runner?
Yes, a factory-halogen 4Runner headlight assembly can be upgraded to LED bulbs designed for the correct bulb size.
However, not all LED bulbs perform the same way in a factory reflector or projector housing.
A good LED replacement should:
- Match the original bulb's mounting position
- Position the LED emitters correctly
- Fit inside the factory housing
- Allow the factory dust cover to be reinstalled
- Provide appropriate thermal management
- Produce a controlled beam pattern
- Work correctly with the vehicle's electrical system
The goal isn't simply to produce the highest claimed lumen number.
The goal is to put useful light on the road without creating excessive glare.

4Runner upgraded with Fuzed LED Headlight bulbs and Fog light bulbs:

5th Gen 4Runner LED Headlight Beam Pattern
The factory 4Runner projector headlight uses a defined cutoff to control where the headlight beam goes.
When upgrading to LED, bulb design and LED-chip positioning matter.
Fuzed's testing of its F1 series on the 4Runner focuses on maintaining the factory beam pattern while increasing usable light output. The current Fuzed page includes actual installation/testing material and reports an increase in output while maintaining the cutoff.
Why does LED bulb orientation matter?
The LED emitters need to sit in the correct position relative to the factory housing.
If the bulb is rotated incorrectly, you can end up with:
- An unfocused beam
- Reduced usable light
- More scattered light
- Poor cutoff definition
- Increased glare
Always check the beam pattern after installing an LED bulb.

Fuzed LED 4Runner LED Headlight Testing
We don't believe an LED bulb should be judged by a lumen number alone.
For the 4Runner, we pay particular attention to:
Fitment
Does the bulb properly lock into the factory housing?
Orientation
Are the LED emitters positioned correctly?
Beam pattern
Does the factory cutoff remain properly defined?
Output
How much usable light reaches the road?
Clearance
Can the factory dust cover be reinstalled?
Electrical compatibility
Does the bulb operate correctly with the 4Runner's electrical system?

Pro tip for Fuzed: Always be sure to reinstall your dust cover after replacing your headlight bulbs, if it is left off you will allow moisture and dirt into the assembly causing it to dull your output.
How to Install LED Headlight Bulbs on a 4Runner
Installing the Fuzed F1 series on a factory-halogen 4Runner is relatively straightforward.
Step 1 — Remove the factory dust cover
Access the rear of the headlight assembly and remove the factory dust cover.
Step 2 — Disconnect the factory bulb
Disconnect the electrical connector from the factory halogen bulb.
Step 3 — Remove the factory bulb
Rotate the factory bulb counterclockwise and remove it from the housing.
Step 4 — Install the Fuzed LED bulb
Line up the locking tabs on the Fuzed bulb with the slots in the factory housing.
Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks securely into position.
Step 5 — Check bulb orientation
Make sure the bulb is fully seated and correctly oriented.
Correct orientation is important for beam pattern and output.
Step 6 — Connect the electrical connector
Connect the Fuzed LED bulb to the factory connector.
If your specific bulb has polarity-sensitive wiring, make sure the positive and negative connections are correctly oriented.
Step 7 — Test the bulb
Turn the headlights on.
If the bulb does not illuminate, disconnect the connector, reverse the connection if applicable, and test again.
Step 8 — Reinstall the dust cover
Once the bulb is operating correctly, reinstall the factory dust cover.
Fuzed's existing 4Runner installation instructions follow this basic process and include an installation video.
Why Are My 4Runner LED Headlights Flickering?
One of the most common issues when upgrading a 4Runner to LED is high-beam flickering.
The reason is that the 4Runner can use the high-beam circuit for daytime-running-light operation. DRL operation can reduce the electrical power supplied to the bulb, and some LED bulbs may respond by flickering or failing to operate normally. Fuzed specifically documents this issue on its 4Runner testing page.
The solution
A compatible CANBUS decoder may be required for the high-beam LED application.
→ Shop Fuzed LED CANBUS Decoders
Why Won't My 4Runner LED Bulb Turn On?
If your LED bulb is installed but doesn't illuminate:
1. Check the connector
Disconnect the bulb and reconnect it securely.
2. Check polarity
Some LED bulbs are polarity-sensitive.
Reverse the connector if the bulb does not illuminate.
3. Check the factory socket
Make sure the bulb is fully seated.
4. Check the vehicle's fuse
If the factory bulb also doesn't operate, check the relevant fuse and electrical connection.
5. Check CANBUS compatibility
If the issue occurs specifically with a DRL/high-beam circuit, a compatible decoder may be required.
Why Won't My 4Runner LED Bulb Lock Into Place?
The factory 4Runner headlight housing can be a tight fit.
If the LED bulb won't fully lock:
- Remove the bulb.
- Check that the locking tabs are aligned.
- Make sure the sealing ring isn't preventing the bulb from seating correctly.
- Compare the LED bulb against the factory bulb.
- Reinstall carefully without forcing the bulb.
Fuzed's existing 4Runner testing notes that the factory housing can be tight and that changing the seal may help in some installations.
Never force a bulb into the housing.
How Do I Know If My 4Runner Has Factory Halogen or LED Headlights?
Before purchasing replacement bulbs, determine what type of factory headlight assembly your 4Runner has.
Factory halogen
These systems use replaceable halogen bulbs such as H11 and 9005 for the applicable headlight positions.
Factory LED
Some factory LED assemblies use integrated LED components rather than conventional replaceable bulbs.
Aftermarket headlights
If your 4Runner has aftermarket headlights, the bulb size may be completely different from the original factory configuration.
If you have aftermarket headlights, always verify the bulb specification supplied by the headlight manufacturer.
This distinction is important because aftermarket assemblies can use different bulb sizes from the factory configuration.
4Runner LED Bulb Buying Guide
When choosing an LED upgrade for your 4Runner, don't choose based solely on the advertised lumen number.
Look for:
