Which Headlights Does My GMC Sierra Have?
Identifying the factory headlight configuration is one of the most important steps when purchasing replacement lighting for a Sierra. This is especially important on 2016–2018 Sierra 1500 models, which were available with multiple factory headlight systems.
9012 Halogen Headlights
Factory halogen Sierra headlights use a replaceable 9012 headlight bulb. These are the applications covered by the FUZED LED installation tutorial below and can be upgraded using compatible FUZED LED 9012 bulbs.
D5 HID Headlights
Some 2016–2018 Sierra 1500 and 2016–2019 Sierra 2500HD/3500HD trucks were equipped with factory D5 HID headlights. These are different from the 9012 halogen configuration and should not be ordered as a 9012 application.
Factory LED Headlights
Some Sierra 1500 trucks were equipped with complete factory LED headlight assemblies. These assemblies do not use a conventional replaceable halogen headlight bulb.
Not Sure Which One You Have?
Check the existing bulb and headlight assembly before ordering. The factory connector, bulb markings and headlight design can help identify whether the truck is equipped with halogen, HID or factory LED lighting.

How to Install 9012 LED Headlight Bulbs in a GMC Sierra
The installation below was performed on a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 equipped with factory halogen headlights. The truck uses a replaceable 9012 headlight bulb.
This installation procedure also applies to compatible 2014–2018 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2015–2019 Sierra 2500HD/3500HD factory-halogen applications covered by this guide. Access and surrounding components can vary slightly by year and configuration.
Before You Start
The passenger side requires more disassembly than the driver side. On the 2015 Sierra 1500 shown here, the passenger-side airbox is removed to gain access to the rear of the headlight assembly.
After completing the passenger side, the driver-side bulb can be replaced using the same basic bulb-removal and installation procedure without removing the airbox.
Remove the Upper Cover Panel
Begin on the passenger side. Remove the retaining clips securing the upper cover panel, then lift the panel away from the truck and set it aside.

Disconnect the Mass Air Flow Sensor
Unlock the mass air flow sensor connector by sliding the red locking tab upward. Squeeze the connector and carefully wiggle it upward to disconnect it.

Remove the Passenger-Side Airbox
Remove the two 10mm bolts from the support rod and set the rod aside. Unclip the wiring harness from the airbox, loosen the hose clamp on the intake tube and work the intake tube loose.
Once everything is disconnected, pull straight upward on the airbox to remove it from the truck.

Move the Headlight Trim Panel
Remove the retaining clips and wiring-harness clips from the trim panel behind the passenger-side headlight assembly. Pull the panel back far enough to access the rear headlight dust cover.

Remove the Headlight Dust Cover
With the rear of the headlight accessible, rotate the factory dust cover counterclockwise to unlock it. Remove the cover to expose the factory headlight bulb.

Remove the Factory 9012 Halogen Bulb
Disconnect the factory bulb connector by lifting the connector clip while pulling the connector away from the bulb.
Rotate the factory 9012 halogen bulb counterclockwise and carefully remove it from the headlight housing.

Connect the FUZED LED 9012 Bulb
When connecting the F1 Series LED bulb, pay attention to the positive and negative markings on the connector. On the bulb shown in this installation, line the red wire up with the positive (+) marking.

Install and Align the LED Headlight Bulb
Line up the tabs on the 9012 LED bulb with the headlight housing. Insert the bulb and rotate it clockwise until it locks securely into place.
After the bulb is locked into the housing, rotate the bulb within its adjustable base so that the LED chips face left and right inside the headlight housing.
On the F1 Series bulb shown here, the fan wire pointing straight upward provides a quick visual reference that the LED chips are positioned left and right.

Test the LED Headlight Before Reassembly
Before reinstalling the dust cover, airbox and trim components, test the new LED headlight to confirm that it is operating correctly.

Reinstall the Dust Cover
Once the LED bulb has been tested and its orientation confirmed, reinstall the factory headlight dust cover. Make sure the cover is fully seated and locked into position.

Reinstall the Airbox and Passenger-Side Components
Reinstall the passenger-side airbox, intake tube, support rod, wiring clips and upper cover panel in the reverse order of removal.
Make sure the mass air flow sensor connector is fully reconnected and locked before starting the truck.

Installing the Driver-Side LED Headlight
The driver side is considerably easier on the 2015 Sierra 1500 shown in this guide because the headlight can be accessed without removing the passenger-side airbox components.
Remove the driver-side dust cover, disconnect and remove the factory halogen bulb, install the FUZED LED bulb, set the correct LED-chip orientation, test the bulb and reinstall the dust cover.

LED output is about more than simply producing more light. The position of the LED chips inside the factory housing also affects how the headlight projects light onto the road.
This is why the F1 Series bulb is rotated after installation so the LED chips face left and right inside the Sierra headlight housing.
Why LED Bulb Alignment Is Important
The original halogen headlight places its filament at a specific location inside the housing. A properly designed LED replacement attempts to place its light-producing surfaces in a similar position so the factory optics can continue directing the light effectively.
Installing an adjustable LED bulb in the wrong rotational position can change the resulting beam. For the F1 Series installation shown here, position the LED chips so they face left and right.
