2015-2023 Dodge Challenger LED bulb size guide showing 9012 HIR2 headlights, H11 fog lights and D3S HID

2015–2023 Dodge Challenger Bulb Size Guide & LED Headlight Installation

Looking for the correct bulb sizes for a 2015–2023 Dodge Challenger? This guide covers the factory halogen and HID headlight configurations, fog-light bulb size, interior lighting, LED upgrade options, headlight installation, beam-pattern comparison and headlight aiming.

For 2015–2023 Dodge Challenger models equipped with factory halogen headlights, the headlight bulb size is 9012 / HIR2. The same bulb is used for both low- and high-beam operation. The 9012 is a single-beam bulb, while an internal door inside the headlight housing changes the projected beam pattern when the high beams are activated.

Some Challengers were instead equipped with factory D3S HID headlights. These are a different headlight system and do not use a 9012/HIR2 replacement bulb.

Quick Answer:
2015–2023 Dodge Challenger factory halogen headlight: 9012 / HIR2
Factory HID headlight: D3S

9012/HIR2 Headlights: How the Challenger Low & High Beams Work

A common source of confusion with the 2015–2023 Challenger is that a bulb chart may list the same 9012/HIR2 bulb for both the low and high beams. There are not separate halogen bulbs for each beam on this headlight configuration.

Each factory-halogen headlight uses a single 9012/HIR2 bulb. The headlight housing controls the beam pattern, and an internal door opens when the high beams are activated to allow the headlight to project the high-beam pattern. This means you only need one 9012/HIR2 bulb per headlight, or one pair for the vehicle.

9012/HIR2 LED Headlight Upgrade for the 2015–2023 Dodge Challenger

For the installation and beam-pattern testing shown in this guide, we replaced the factory 9012/HIR2 halogen bulbs with FUZED LED F1 Series 9012 LED headlight bulbs.

The upgrade retains the factory headlight housing and replaces the original halogen bulb. Below, we'll show the actual installation on a Dodge Challenger, including both the passenger and driver sides, followed by a comparison of the factory halogen and FUZED LED beam patterns.

2015–2023 Dodge Challenger LED Headlight Installation Video

The video below shows the complete LED headlight installation on a 2020 Dodge Challenger equipped with factory halogen headlights. The procedure covers both sides of the vehicle, including removal of the air box for driver-side access, installation of the LED bulbs, testing, headlight adjustment and a before-and-after beam-pattern comparison.

How to Install 9012 LED Headlight Bulbs in a 2015–2023 Dodge Challenger

Access is different on the two sides of the Challenger. The passenger-side bulb can be accessed without removing major engine-bay components. The driver side requires additional work because the factory air box blocks access to the rear of the headlight housing.

Passenger-Side Headlight Bulb Replacement

STEP 1

Access the Passenger-Side Headlight

The passenger-side headlight is the easier side of the installation. Reach behind the headlight housing from the engine bay to access the rear of the headlight without removing the air box.

STEP 2

Remove the Factory 9012/HIR2 Halogen Bulb

Remove the rear headlight access cover as required, disconnect the factory electrical connector and remove the original 9012/HIR2 halogen bulb from the housing.

Driver-Side Headlight Bulb Replacement

The driver-side installation takes a little longer because the factory air box limits access to the rear of the headlight housing.

STEP 1

Remove the Air Box for Driver-Side Access

Remove the necessary air-intake and air-box components to create enough working room behind the driver-side headlight housing. Once the air box is out of the way, the rear of the headlight becomes accessible.

Factory Halogen vs FUZED LED Beam Pattern

Light output is only part of an LED headlight upgrade. The way the light source works with the factory projector housing also affects where the light is projected onto the road.

To show the difference, we photographed the factory 9012/HIR2 halogen beam pattern against a dark wall and then photographed the FUZED LED output against the same wall after the installation.

AFTER: FUZED F1 Series 9012 LED headlight output.

The comparison shows the change from the warmer factory halogen output to the whiter LED output while allowing you to see how the factory Challenger headlight housing projects the light after the bulb change.

Why we show the actual beam pattern:
LED headlight performance should not be judged by lumen specifications alone. Bulb position, headlight design, beam pattern and headlight aim all affect the usable light produced by the finished installation.

How to Adjust 2015–2023 Dodge Challenger Headlights

After replacing a headlight bulb, it is a good idea to check the headlight aim. A brighter bulb does not compensate for a headlight housing that is aimed too high or too low.

A wall provides a useful visual reference when checking the vertical position of the beam pattern. Park the vehicle on a level surface facing a flat wall, keep the vehicle straight and compare the position of the beam pattern to the height and position of the headlights.

Locate the Headlight Adjustment Screw

The vertical headlight adjustment is made using the adjustment point on the headlight assembly. Make small adjustments while watching the beam position on the wall rather than making a large change all at once.

Headlight aiming tip: The goal is not to aim the headlights as high as possible. Check both sides against the same wall reference and make controlled adjustments so the headlights remain properly aimed.

Does the 2015–2023 Dodge Challenger Use Separate High-Beam Bulbs?

Not on the factory-halogen headlight configuration covered in this installation. The Challenger uses one 9012/HIR2 bulb in each headlight housing for both low- and high-beam operation.

Instead of switching to a second high-beam bulb, the headlight housing changes the projected beam pattern when the high beams are activated. Therefore, a pair of 9012/HIR2 bulbs replaces the headlight bulbs on the vehicle.

2015–2023 Dodge Challenger Fog Light Bulb Size

The replaceable front fog-light bulb listed for the 2015–2023 Dodge Challenger is H11. This applies to vehicles equipped with the applicable factory fog-light configuration.

If you're upgrading the fog lights at the same time as the headlights, FUZED LED offers H11 LED bulb options that allow you to replace the factory halogen fog-light bulbs.

What If My Challenger Has Factory D3S HID Headlights?

Some 2015–2023 Dodge Challengers were equipped with factory HID headlights instead of the 9012/HIR2 halogen system.

The factory HID bulb is D3S. A factory-HID Challenger should not use the 9012/HIR2 LED bulbs shown in the halogen installation above.

FUZED LED offers two HID-to-LED conversion approaches for applicable D3S systems:

D3S Plug-and-Play HID-to-LED Kit D3S Ballast-Bypass LED Kit

Do not order by model year alone. Check which factory headlight system is installed on your Challenger before choosing between a 9012/HIR2 halogen replacement and a D3S HID conversion.

2015–2023 Dodge Challenger Interior Bulb Sizes

In addition to the exterior lighting, the Challenger uses several replaceable interior bulbs. Some lighting positions and equipment can vary by configuration, so verify the original bulb before replacing optional interior lighting.

Which 2015–2023 Challenger Exterior Lights Are Factory LED?

Unlike earlier Challenger generations that used replaceable incandescent bulbs in many exterior positions, much of the exterior lighting on the 2015–2023 generation is integrated LED lighting.

Factory LED positions include the front park/turn lighting, front side markers, tail lights, brake/rear turn lights, rear side markers, reverse lights, center high-mounted stop light and license-plate lighting.

Because these positions are factory LED assemblies rather than conventional replaceable bulbs, we do not list traditional replacement bulb sizes for them in this guide.

2015–2023 Dodge Challenger LED Headlight FAQ

What headlight bulb does a 2015–2023 Dodge Challenger use?

Dodge Challengers equipped with the factory halogen headlight system use a 9012/HIR2 headlight bulb. Factory HID-equipped Challengers use a D3S HID bulb instead.

Is 9012 the same as HIR2?

Yes. The 9012 bulb is also commonly identified as HIR2. Dodge documentation may identify the original long-life halogen version as HIR2LL or 9012LL.

Does the Dodge Challenger use the same bulb for high and low beam?

On the 2015–2023 factory-halogen headlight configuration, yes. One 9012/HIR2 bulb is installed in each headlight. The headlight housing changes the projected beam pattern for high-beam operation rather than using a separate high-beam bulb.

How many 9012 bulbs do I need for a Dodge Challenger?

You need two 9012/HIR2 bulbs to replace both headlights on a factory-halogen Challenger — one bulb for the driver side and one for the passenger side.

Do I have to remove the air box to change the Challenger headlight bulbs?

The passenger-side bulb can be accessed without removing the air box. On the driver side, the air box restricts access to the rear of the headlight, so removing it provides the room needed to reach and replace the bulb.

What fog-light bulb does a 2015–2023 Dodge Challenger use?

Challengers equipped with the applicable replaceable factory fog-light configuration use an H11 bulb.

Can I use a 9012 LED bulb if my Challenger has factory HID headlights?

No. The factory HID system uses a D3S bulb and is different from the 9012/HIR2 halogen headlight system. Verify the original headlight type before ordering.

Should I check my headlight aim after installing LED bulbs?

Yes. Checking the beam against a wall after installation lets you confirm that the headlights remain properly aimed. Headlight aim affects where the usable light is projected and should be checked after a bulb replacement.
